| St James’ Park stadium was the venue for startupslive Newcastle, the fourth in the current series of events. It was an appropriate setting to hear how former bodybuilder Zef Eisenberg founded sports nutrition brand Maximuscle with just £3,000 in 1995, and turned it into a market leader. Zef revealed how endorsement from top athletes and effective marketing sent the growth curve vertical, how he turned a potential disaster into a PR masterstroke and how he achieved a £75m price tag when it was sold last year. Brian Jobling, founder of award winning video games developer Eutechnyx provided some local inspiration by telling the audience how funding from an RDA helped the Gateshead based firm build on its track record of successes on both sides of the Atlantic. |

Another event packed to the rafters with delegates, startupslive Manchester saw chef entrepreneur
Paul Heathcote and local enterprising heroes Andrea Winders & Tina Dutton of members’ vehicle club Pink Ladies share their experiences of setting up their successful businesses. Paul recalled how his chain of restaurants wasn’t all plain sailing from the outset, and explained how he turned a loss of £25,000 after six months into current revenues in excess of £12m. The Pink Ladies founders revealed why their business wouldn’t have succeeded without effective PR, and admitted that they’re still winning press coverage and business from the marketing they did when they launched 2005. |

The second event in the spring startupslive series successfully picked up where the London evening left off, with Wilfred Jones, aka The Black Famer, regaling over 100 fledgling entrepreneurs and business owners with an outspoken and charismatic performance. Wilfred’s emphasis on the importance of being able to market your company and its products innovatively and efficiently was echoed by
Nigel Botterill, managing director of online directory franchise thebestof. The panel discussion provided further hands-on advice for the enterprising audience, and the two networking periods once again provided an opportunity for lively and valuable interaction. |

The first in the spring 2008 season of startupslive saw Seb Bishop, pioneer of the UK’s pay-per-click advertising model, entertain a 170-strong crowd of budding entrepreneurs and small business owners. Seb recalled the early days of his online adverting company Espotting, recounting tales of PR stunts and being laughed out of bank managers’ offices. Texperts founder Sarah McVittie also gave a detailed account of the difficulties in funding her company and described the relief she felt when Barclays eventually agreed to give her a loan. There was lively debate between the entrepreneurs and delegates during the panel discussion, and the networking was still going strong long after the drinks stopped flowing.
